Farmers Insurance Open First-Round Leader Predictions
Teeing off Wednesday and finishing on Saturday to clear the way for the NFL Conference Championship games, the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open is now just hours away. So far this season, predicting a winner has been as hard as it has ever been with massive longshots, all over 200-1, winning the three events thus far.
Similar to the format we saw last week at The American Express, the Farmers Insurance Open is spread over multiple courses, with Torrey Pines North and Torrey Pines South playing host to the four rounds. The entire 150+ golfer field will play each Wednesday and Thursday, with the Torrey Pines South owning the weekend rounds. Both longer than the Tour average, the green sizes average around 5,5000 square feet, making them amongst the smallest targets these guys will see all season.
Making this week even more tricky, the greens vary by course, with the South Course featuring Poa Annua greens and the North Course featuring Bentgrass greens. While there are no water hazards on either one, there are more than 40 bunkers players will be looking to avoid.
With some of the world’s best in the field this week including Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, and reigning champion Max Homa, the top guys will be looking to get back on top starting Wednesday at Torrey Pines. Let’s take a look at three guys I think can do just that and get off to a hot start.

A winner here in 2018, Day’s game dipped in the years that followed, but in the past 18 months, shades of the old him have started to lurk at every event. Coming into the week, he’s one of just six guys in the field in the top 20 OWGR, in large part thanks to a top 10 finish two weeks ago at The Sentry. Firing a -18 last week at The American Express, Day’s form looks to have been picked up right where he left it to end 2023.

One of the most increasingly popular guys on the PGA Tour, Homa will look to become just the second guy (Brandt Snedeker) to win this event twice. He’s well positioned to do so, with a pair of top 20s in this event already and a recent win under his belt in November.

If you aren’t already, Theegala is a name you should get familiar with in the world of golf. On just his second full-time season on Tour, Theegala is off to a strong start with a solo second place at Kapulua earlier this month. With a pair of top 25s here in 2022 and 2023, this course fits him well.
