Ascot 15:15 Racecard & Betting Preview

Sporting Life Preview

RIBCHESTER came here a year ago having won a Group 1 at Deauville and this time arrives with another top-class victory at Chantilly to his credit. Richard Fahey's brilliant miler couldn't quite get to Minding a year ago and probably has another Ballydoyle inmate as his main rival here. Churchill surpassed his superb juvenile form to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Curragh though has subsequently suffered three defeats, the latest two over further. He's on a retrieval mission here and will need to be right back to his best. Al Wukair wasn't far behind him in the first colt's classic and showed his liking for soft ground with a battling victory in the Jacques Le Marois at Deauville, the race the selection won last year on his way here, and though Beat The Bank has never run in a Group 1 he could hardly have been more impressive in the Joel Stakes at Newmarket when there was some cut in the ground.

Oddschecker Verdict

The straight course at Ascot has seen RIBCHESTER at his very best at the last two Royal meetings and the course and distance winner sets the standard as the leading miler of the season and the flagbearer for northern Flat racing. Richard Fahey's four-year-old faces strong opposition led by Aidan O'Brien's dual-Guineas winner Churchill who is respected dropping back to a mile. The master of Ballydoyle's son of Galileo should be assisted by pacemakers Lancaster Bomber and Sir John Lavery and the leading three-year-old could help his handler towards breaking Bobby Frankel's record for the number of Group One wins in a calender year. Godolphin themselves hold a worthy alternative to the selection, with the well travelled Thunder Snow potentially under the radar based on what he has achieved this season, while the French raider Al Wukair has been lightly raced this season, and has to be considered on the back of the high regard he is held in by his handler and native pundits. Beat The Bank arrives here unbeaten in three having landed the Joel Stakes last time and is another entitled to get involved, while at longer odds the filly Sea Of Grace is capable of outrunning her odds back at a mile and on predicted soft ground.

Prediction: 1st Ribchester, 2nd Churchill, 3rd Thunder Snow
