Racing has a long history in Ayr, with the present track used since 1907. Flat and jumps fixtures are hosted, including two of Scotland's big races, the Ayr Gold Cup sprint and Scottish Grand National.
The straight six furlongs is slightly downhill for the first half, then slightly uphill for the final three furlongs. An extension to a very slightly undulating back straight provides a 1m 3f start, and the turn into the home straight is fairly sharp, but easy enough. In general, this is a fair, flat, galloping track which should suit most horses.
Draw bias: Over sprint trips, the bias depends on the position of the stalls. When placed on the inside, low draws have a marginal advantage. More often than not, the stalls are placed on the stands side, and high draws tend to be favoured on quick ground. On soft ground, which it often is at Ayr, they tend to stick to the middle and any bias is negligible. Over 7f, high draws do well as those drawn low have a tendency to go off too fast around the first bend. Over 8f, low draws are favoured as they are able to get a good position ready for the swing into the home straight.
