Australia v Germany - Monday 16:00, ITV4
Australia qualified for this Confederations Cup by virtue of their triumph in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup but they have a tough opener as they play World Champions Germany. Many of the stars that were part of that World Cup-winning squad won’t be present here, with the likes of Neuer, Hummels, Boateng, Ozil, Muller and Kroos all given a rest. However, none of the aforementioned players featured in the German squad at the Olympics which narrowly missed out to a strong Brazilian side on penalties and so they’ve shown they have tremendous strength in depth.
The Aussies were thumped 4-0 by a rotated Brazil side in the run-up to this tournament and something similar could be on the cards here. They’ve lost seven of their last eight games against teams we have ranked in the world’s top-10 (Germany are unsurprisingly number 1), conceding 26 goals across these matches and failing to score in half.
Germany have been in excellent form since they went out to France at the Euros in somewhat unfortunate circumstances as they were dominating the game before a penalty changed the course of proceedings: they’ve won eight of 10 unbeaten matches, conceding just twice in this time. Indeed, they’ve kept a clean sheet in 11 of their last 13 games against teams outside the top-20 in the world and so we’re backing Germany to win to nil.
