THE EAGLES NEST (best price 9-2) has some useful form next to his name over today’s C&D. Admittedly, Rae Guest’s gelding ran well below expectations at Windsor on the turf last time out, but prior to that inexplicable performance he’d ran extremely well in a much better race than today’s over today’s C&D and on that form he’d definitely have more than a squeak here. Off a similar mark to his last winning one back in December, the son of Lope De Vega is also worth a small bet at the morning prices.
16:45 Ffos Las
There’s no denying Sharja Silk creates most interest here being the sexy three-year-old in a handicap, but the one thing he hasn’t got that NABHAN (best price 18-1) has in abundance, is proven course form and for that reason, Bernard Llewellyn’s gelding rates the value bet of the race.
Although the six-year-old hasn’t run on the Flat since disappointing at Chester last September, he has been in decent form of late over hurdles and his latest effort when runner-up to the in-form Mister Fizz at Newton Abbot highlights his current wellbeing.
A previous C&D winner on the level off a similar mark to today’s, his form figures at the Welsh track now read 221 and with all his best efforts coming with plenty of ease in the ground, odds of 18-1 look on the big side for this durable performer.
18:05 Nottingham
Although SOOTABILITY (NAP) (best price 13-8) didn’t exactly smash the ball out of the park on the figures when winning on debut (still recorded a fair speed figure), there was still plenty to like about the manner of her performance, and with expected improvement to come based on her pedigree, Richard Fahey’s filly is taken to continue her progression.
Slow away from her wide draw at the Yorkshire venue, the daughter of Camelot found herself with plenty to do at halfway, but with a long stretch burst down the centre of the track, she overcame the deficit to score with a bit in hand at the line.
Not only impressing with her attitude, this two-year-old filly managed to clock the best closing 3f sectionals on the seven-race card (a full second quicker than the two 6f handicaps), and with likelihood that tonight’s extra distance will play even more into her strengths, it will clearly take a smart performance by one of her rivals to lower her colours.
