JCB Triumph Hurdle Tips

Jake Price - Proactif

Despite initially being concerned that PROACTIF may end up running in the Triumph with an insufficient amount of experience under his belt owing to the fact that his Fairyhouse win was too close to the DRF to run in a Grade 1 subsequently, I have very much come round to him following the withdrawal of Narciso Has in the build up to The Festival.

Back in France this lad was a good six length winner of the Prix Finot at Auteuil over 2m2f when having the reopposing Apolon De Charnie behind, but his aforementioned debut for Willie Mullins at Fairyhouse in January was a particularly smart performance considering he was hassled for the lead almost the whole way by Combs.

Rishi Persad's Selection: SELMA DE VARY

Very talented filly who produced a smart performance to win her final start in France back in November. She made a hugely encouraging start to life with Willie Mullins when second to Narciso Has at the Dublin Racing Festival and with the latter sidelined, she looks to have a great chance in this race.

County Handicap Hurdle

Rishi Persad's Selection: SINNATRA

The Skeltons managed to get the fifth qualifying run in for this novice with three days to spare and he is an intriguing contender from near the bottom of the weights. His form when second to Act Of Innocence at Newbury in November was given a big boost in Wednesday’s Turners Novice at the Festival and he should be suited by the demands of the County.

Road to Cheltenham's Selection: Karbau

Paul Townend’s only handicap ride of the entire week, KARBAU is the clear favourite to win the County Hurdle and he has a fantastic chance of being competitive based on his form at Aintree and Punchestown at the back end of last season.

Mares' Chase

Steve Ryder's Ante Post Tip: Panic Attack
Price Tipped At: 9/1
Current Best Price: 2/1

Road to Cheltenham Selection - Panic Attack

I’ve said for the last few weeks that I want to try and take Dinoblue on and I’ve landed on the Dan Skelton-trained PANIC ATTACK. She has been a revelation this season, winning the Paddy Power Gold Cup and Coral Gold Cup and she seems to be better than ever.

Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle

Road to Cheltenham's Selection: HIPOP DE LOIRE

A left-field shout but I’m warming to the chances of HIPOP DE LOIRE and the booking of Harry Cobden is a positive one. He’s ran just twice over hurdles, but it is the form of his Galway success last summer that catches my eye.

He bolted up in a 2m6f maiden hurdle, pulling clear of a decent enough field – with the likes of Zanndabad and Son Of Anarchy trailing behind. He is rated 107 on the flat, he’ll stay the trip and I’m hoping he has the class to overcome his inexperience.

Jake Price's Picks: DOCTOR STEINBERG (Ante-Post);
THEDEVILUNO

For some reason DOCTOR STEINBERG has become many observers idea of a lay of the meeting, but I couldn’t be stronger on his chances here and am buzzing with the 16/1 position we secured in my Cheltenham Festival Ante-Post column. If he consents to settling in the early stages then he will take some stopping, as he has developed into a very smart Novice this season.

With the position in hand it is worth covering a horse off in the betting however, and I am electing to go with THEDEVILUNO, who conversely is fancied by most of those aforementioned observers. His hack up job in the Grade 2 River Don Novices’ Hurdle was extremely impressive, and whilst I do think it would be difficult for him to reverse the Navan form with the Doctor, we do at least know that he stays this trip without a bother.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase

Jake Price's Pick: Gaelic Warrior

I’ve been banging the drum for GAELIC WARRIOR in the Cheltenham Gold Cup all year long and I put him up at 16/1 for the race in my Oddschecker season preview. He has an excellent opportunity and Paul Townend will be in the saddle – which is a huge positive.

Taking nothing away from the winner, I felt he was unlucky in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park but he can make amends here. The extra distance will be of no concern and a drop of rain will surely enhance his chances too. He has a lot going for him.

Steve Ryder's Choice: Jango Baie

This is a fascinating edition of the Cheltenham Gold Cup with the King George VI Chase from Kempton on Boxing Day looking the key form line. The Jukebox Man beat both Gaelic Warrior and Jango Baie (best priced at 11/2) by a narrow margin that day but the fourth looked the most inconvenienced by how the race was run.

Slightly slow jumps at both the third last and second last obstacles meant Jango Baie couldn’t close off a slow pace and the Nicky Henderson trained seven-year-old is unbeaten in his two starts at Cheltenham including a last gasp victory in the Arkle Challenge Trophy last season.

Princess Royal Challenge Cup Open Hunters' Chase

Rishi Persad's Selection: CON'S ROC

One of the least exposed runners in this field. Ran a fine race to be third to Its On The Line at Down Royal in December where he seemed to get a little outpaced before staying on strongly. He will have an extra two and a half furlongs to bring his stamina into play today as well as the addition of cheek pieces and looks sure to play a significant part.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle

Jake Price's Pick: OPEN SECRET

This is a fiendishly difficult Martin Pipe, but one that I thought had very feasible claims at a big price is OPEN SECRET – who is surely one of Gordon Elliott’s bet chances in the race. He has certainly been a bit of a slow burner over obstacles, but following a second place to Gin Tonic he then absolutely bolted up in a 2m3f Maiden Hurdle at Naas in December, where he beat dual subsequent winner Raise You Up by an easy seven lengths.

What I like most about this horse was that they ran him over this course and distance on Trials Day, where he was sent off a 14/1 outsider in the Grade 2 Classic Novices’ Hurdle. The race is now synonymous with the hole in the track incident beforehand, but when they eventually got going he plugged on nicely into fourth place – only beaten 3.25 lengths in total by Kripticjim (135), Taurus Bay (135) and Fortune Timmy (132).

Road to Cheltenham's Pick: AIR OF ENTITELEMENT

Last but certainly not least, one of my strongest handicap fancies of the meeting goes in the Martin Pipe and I’m hoping that Henry de Bromhead has had a winner or two by the time AIR OF ENTITELEMENT lines up in the Festival finale.

She’s been campaigned tenderly this season, with a view to peaking in the spring and I have no doubt she will benefit for the step up in trip. Owned by Robcour, she relished the uphill finish in the Mares Novices Hurdle last year and she can go close here.
