Heisman Odds: Oklahoma’s Caleb Williams Heisman Chances Skyrocket
The 2021 Oklahoma football season was supposed to be the Spencer Rattler show. Rattler, a former high-end dual-threat QB recruit out of Arizona, came into Norman as the heir apparent to Jalen Hurts. But, not only did Rattler struggle as the starting QB for the Sooners, he completely lost his job a few weeks ago.
In steps Caleb Williams, a true freshman from Washington, D.C. and a monster recruit in his own right. Not only does Williams look good when he takes the field, but it’s clear he’s already better than Rattler.
Williams comes on in relief of Rattler against Texas, leading his team to a come-from-behind win against their rival. Then, the following week, he throws for four TDs in a win over TCU.
It’s clear that Williams is now the starting QB for the Sooners, but what is also clear is that he’s making a late run at the Heisman trophy, according to the latest Heisman odds.
Heisman Odds – Caleb Williams, Oklahoma QB
Caleb Williams Heisman Odds (+4000)
Caleb Williams has made exactly one career college football start. And, wouldn’t you know it, his Heisman odds are already skyrocketing up the board. Why? Well, it’s for a few reasons and they all make sense.
First, when you play QB at Oklahoma under Lincoln Riley you’re going to have Heisman hype. Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts. All three of them either won the Heisman or were invited to the Heisman ceremony. That’s why there was so much Heisman hype behind Spencer Rattler.
Rattler had never started a college football game going into last season and was still among the Heisman favorites. Then, this season, after a disappointing 2020, he was still expected to contend for the award. Now, just one start into his college football career, Caleb Williams’ Heisman odds are as short as +1500.
For reference, those +1500 odds would put him as the fourth favorite in the entire country to win the award. But, thanks to our friends at FanDuel, you can still get Williams’ Heisman odds at +4000, making him the seventh favorite.
The second reason Williams’s Heisman hype is reaching a new high is very simple. He’s good. Like really, really good.
Caleb Williams is already a better QB than Spencer Rattler. I’m comfortable saying that after watching him play roughly six quarters of football.
The reason Caleb Williams’ Heisman odds are such a hot topic right now is because Williams’ talent jumps off the screen. He’s a big body that can beat the defense with his legs or big arm. Unlike Rattler, he delivers the ball with timing almost every single time.
With the talent around him, it makes sense that we’re seeing Caleb Williams’ Heisman odds completely slashed. But, make sure you shop for that +4000 number if you’re going to back the Oklahoma QB to win.
