The PGA Tour heads overseas for the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open this week. Co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, this event is the precursor to the fourth and final major of the season, held in Scotland at Royal Troon next week.
Two of the PGA Tour's biggest names, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele, have won the Scottish Open since 2022. It makes sense that both of these golfers, each with a win at this event in the past two years, remain the favorites to win in 2024. McIlroy is +700 and Schauffele is +800.
Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg, and Viktor Hovland round out the top-five betting favorites, although none of these three golfers have had any substantial success playing at this links-style gold course, located at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland.
PGA handicapper Matt MacKay is back with his latest analysis of the field at the Scottish Open, including current betting data and outright winner odds. Let's dive into the numbers before Round 1 tees off extra early on Thursday morning, just a couple of hours after midnight.
2024 SCOTTISH OPEN ODDS
GOLFER | ODDS |
|---|---|
Rory McIlroy | +700 |
Xander Schauffele | +800 |
Collin Morikawa | +1200 |
Ludvig Åberg | +1400 |
Viktor Hovland | +2000 |
Tommy Fleetwood | +2200 |
Min Woo Lee | +2500 |
Tom Kim | +2800 |
Hideki Matsuyama | +3000 |
Justin Thomas | +3500 |
Matt Fitzpatrick | +4000 |
Robert MacIntyre | +4500 |
Corey Conners | +4500 |
Sungjae Im | +4500 |
A couple of names hold value in the current outright winner betting market ahead of Round 1 at the Scottish Open. Tom Kim at 28-1 is interesting, especially since the South Korean native has carded a solo third-place finish and T6 finish across the last two events.
Tommy Fleetwood remains without a PGA Tour win but he fared well at this event in 2022, recording a T4 finish after struggling in the opening round, which kept him from contending for the outright win. In 2023, the Englishman managed a T6 finish, red-hot in the middle rounds at 11-under-par, but falling flat with a +2 finish in the final round. At 22-1, Fleetwood is another golfer worth investing.
Matt Fitzpatrick, another Englishman familiar with links-style courses like Renaissance Club, regressed from a T6 in 2022 to a missed cut in 2023. The ball-striker is 40-1, offering good value, although he's finished well outside the top-25 in four of his past five events played.
Finally, Robert MacIntyre, who broke through with his first win on the PGA Tour at the RBC Canadian Open, is getting the most bets placed on him early in the week. The Scottish native carded a runner-up finish one stroke behind Rory McIlroy in 2023, after going 6-under-par in Round 4. At 45-1, MacIntyre is a great prospect to target in the outright winner betting market.
SCOTTISH OPEN BETTING DATA
GOLFER | PERCENTAGE OF BETS |
|---|---|
Robert MacIntyre | 8.19% |
Rory McIlroy | 7.47% |
Ludvig Åberg | 5.69% |
Matt Fitzpatrick | 4.98% |
Xander Schauffele | 4.56% |
ROBERT MACINTYRE (8.19%)
Over eight percent of all bets placed on outright winners ahead of the 2024 Scottish Open are on Robert MacIntyre. The Scotsman has looked a bit pedestrian since his win at the RBC Canadian Open a few weeks ago, but he did log a T16 at the Travelers Championship, sandwiched between a pair of missed cuts.
MacIntyre performed well at this event in 2023 with his solo runner-up finish at 14-under-par, while missing the cut in 2022. He's another golfer who grew up playing links courses, plus, he's ranked 39th total stroked gained, including 38th off-the-tee, first in approach shots from over 200 yards, and 28th scrambling.
Boasting a 12th ranked scoring average and top-40 on par 4s, MacIntyre's popularity in the outright winner betting market makes quite a bit of sense. A quarter unit stake returns 11 units of profit, so don't hesitate to bet on MacIntyre back in his home country.
RORY MCILROY (7.47%)
After a brutal choke down the final stretch at the U.S. Open, Rory McIlroy returns to defend his title at the Renaissance Club this week. McIlroy didn't compete at the 2022 Scottish Open but he won in 2023, opening up with a blazing 6-under-par scorecard in Round 1.
Ranked second strokes gained: off-the-tee, 25th on approach, 35th putting, and first for total driving and driving distance, McIlroy's game is built for a links course. He's also 12th in scrambling, 10th in par 4 scoring, and 13th in birdie average.
The only thing not to like about McIlroy this week is how short his odds are at 7-1. He'll either be fueled by his bitter loss to Bryson DeChambeau at the last major a couple of weeks ago, or he'll be a bit rusty after taking some time off.
Bettors are hammering McIlroy though, as he's getting over seven percent of the betting handle to go back-to-back and defend his title at the Renaissance Club.
LUDVIG ÅBERG (5.69%)
Ludvig Åberg is surprisingly getting the third-highest betting handle in the outright winner market this week. The 24-year-old Swede has been a popular pick in outright markets at most events this season, but he didn't perform well here a year ago, missing the cut after going -1-under-par during the first two rounds.
Recently, Åberg has struggled a bit, missing the cut at the PGA Championship and falling outside the top-25 at the Travelers Championship. Perhaps a couple of weeks to rest will help Åberg, who ranks 14th strokes gained: off-the-tee, ninth on approach, and third in total driving.
He finds nearly 69 percent of greens in regulation, while ranking seventh in hole proximity and 14th scrambling. Oddly enough, his putting has regressed in a big way as the season has gone on, which will either make or break his production at the Scottish Open this week.
Åberg is currently 14-1 in the outright winner betting market, behind previous winners McIlroy and Schauffele, as well as Collin Morikawa (+1200). This price feels a bit short but his game tee-to-green has been solid all season long, so it'll pay dividends if Åberg winds up contending on Sunday.
