Formula One: Drivers Championship Winner Odds & Picks

Formula 1 pre-season track sessions start this week in Spain, with one more weekend of testing in Bahrain before the 2022 season officially kicks off. Following an unforgettable 2021 season that came down to the very last race, the familiar names are at the top of the betting board once again.

In a season that will be comprised of 23 races across the world, let’s take a closer look at a few of the favorites I have my eye on to take home the title.

Lewis Hamilton (+110) (Bet $100 to win $110)

In what many considered an unfair ending to the 2021 season in which Hamilton lost due to a technicality in the final lap, the revenge tour begins now for the 7-time F1 champion. In 2021, Hamilton won a staggering 8 events for the Mercedes team who comes into this season having won a record eight consecutive titles.

After teasing the idea of retirement following the disappointment of 2021, Hamilton is not only back this season but as motivated as he’s been in a long time following a season in which at times a bitter rivalry formed with eventual champ Max Verstappen (+225). In what will be his 15th year competing at the highest level in F1, Hamilton is the most experienced driver in this season's field and it isn’t particularly close.

This season will be slightly different than one’s past due to car modification requirements that have swept across the sport. First off, cars now must feature 18-inch wheels (compared to 13 inches previously), as well as underfloor tunnels and redesigned front and rear wings. All intended to give the sport more parity, we won’t know for sure until this week’s testing. For me, great drivers will still reign supreme and with Hamilton’s track record across multiple decades and styles of cars, I’ll still ride with the sure thing.

George Russell (+550)(Bet $100 to win $550)

The most coveted prospect in recent memory, Russell finally will make his debut in the big leagues with Team Mercedes following an impeccable junior career and two full seasons with a lessor Formula One team. Though he might not be quite ready to overthrow arguably the greatest driver of all-time in Hamilton, being on this elite Mercedes team will make him a podium threat each and every week.

As for the only person ahead of Russell not named Lewis Hamilton, reigning F1 champ Verstappen comes into this year following a season in which his team (Red Bull) put everything into the last. Additionally, he’ll be dealing with a new car completely as his engine builder Honda has left the sport.
