Pitching has been a big problem for the A’s. Only the Rockies have a worse ERA than the Athletics, who have a 5.42 ERA. One of the few bright spots has been Jacob Lopez, who began the season in the bullpen.
Lopez has a 3.56 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 28.9% strikeout rate and 8.9% walk rate. As a starter, the A’s left-hander has a 3.15 ERA, a 41:13 K:BB ratio and a .306 wOBA over 34.1 innings. Lopez doesn’t throw hard, but he ranks in the 86th percentile of strikeout rate, 80th percentile of whiff rate and the 88th percentile of hard hit rate. He has a whiff rate of at least 30% on three different pitches.
Lopez has at least six strikeouts in four of the last five starts and has at least nine in three of them, including the Astros, Royals and Tigers. Those teams are all in the bottom 11 in strikeout rate against left-handers. Over his last 27.1 innings, Lopez has 38 strikeouts. The Rays are in the middle of the pack at 23.2%, but are the fifth-highest in June at 25.6%.

Chisholm has been sizzling at the plate since coming off the injured list on June 3rd. He is slashing .318/.379/.600 with 14 runs, four doubles, one triple, six home runs and 18 RBIs over 85 at-bats.
Since coming off the injured list, Chisholm has improved his average exit velocity from 86.7 miles per hour to 91.1 miles per hour and the hard hit rate has improved from 37.3% to 51.6%.
The Yankees third baseman has homered in three of the last four games and has gone over this prop in nine of the last 11 games. He has been locked in at the plate and has a 16.3% barrel rate, which ranks in the 95th percentile.
Chisholm has hit 12 of his 13 home runs against right-handers with an .898 OPS. The Blue Jays will start Max Scherzer. The 40-year-old righty has made two starts and allowed nine hits, five runs, two home runs, three walks and struck out five over eight innings.
