Mountain West champion Boise State heads back to the LA Bowl on Saturday night, this time drawing Washington in a matchup that feels far closer than the spread suggests. The Huskies come in as a double-digit favorite, but this is exactly the type of bowl setting where that number gets inflated by brand name and conference perception rather than what’s actually on the field.
Boise State has been here before. This program isn’t wide-eyed or happy just to be invited — it expects to compete, and it usually does. Catching double digits against a Washington team that has struggled with consistency all season is too much for me to pass up.

Boise State vs. Washington Prediction - Bucked Up LA Bowl
Boise State Is a Different Team with Maddux Madsen
The biggest factor in this handicap is the health and availability of quarterback Maddux Madsen. Boise’s offense clearly missed him down the stretch, sputtering early in games against Fresno State and San Diego State while trying to survive without its field general. That all changed last week in the Mountain West Championship. With Madsen back under center, the Broncos looked like themselves again. The offense pushed tempo, attacked vertically, and finished drives. He threw for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns, and there’s no reason to believe Boise suddenly shelves him in a bowl game where he can return next season fully healthy. That matters because Washington’s offense is far more volatile than the spread implies. Boise doesn’t need to win this game outright — it just needs to function offensively, and with Madsen, that floor is much higher.
Washington’s Season Has Been Uneven — and the Lows Are Concerning
Washington’s record looks respectable, but the path to those wins hasn’t been smooth. When the Huskies face physical defenses, the offense has shown a tendency to stall. That showed up in losses to Michigan, Wisconsin and Oregon, and even in wins, Washington often relied on explosive spurts rather than sustained efficiency. Quarterback Demond Williams Jr. has flashed upside, but he’s also been turnover-prone in losses, and the offense never fully recovered once injuries hit the backfield. Jonah Coleman’s health changed the complexion of the Huskies’ run game, and while replacements have been productive at times, this isn’t the same unit Washington envisioned in August. Now layer in bowl-game uncertainty. Washington has several NFL-caliber players dealing with injuries or draft decisions, and motivation becomes a real question. Is this a launching pad, or is it a consolation prize after a season that could have been more?
This Is a Live, Motivated Boise State Team
Boise State isn’t sneaking up on anyone, but it’s also not walking into this game with nothing to prove. This is a proud program that just won its conference, got its quarterback back, and now gets a chance to measure itself against a Power Four opponent on a national stage. Even with its own personnel losses, Boise’s identity remains intact. The Broncos play disciplined football, limit mistakes, and can manufacture offense through multiple avenues. They’re also accustomed to being the more physical team in most matchups, and Washington has shown that physicality can disrupt its rhythm. Double-digit spreads require separation. Washington hasn’t consistently shown it can create that separation against competent teams.
Why the Number Is Too Big
Boise State with Madsen is capable of scoring into the high 20s. Washington has struggled to maintain offensive efficiency when games turn grindy. And bowl games, especially early ones, have a habit of tightening up rather than turning into track meets. If Washington jumps out early, Boise is equipped to respond. If the game stays close into the second half, the value of +10 becomes even more apparent.

This isn’t about fading Washington — it’s about respecting Boise State. The Broncos are healthy where it matters most, motivated, and experienced in this exact spot. I’m taking the points and backing Boise State to keep this one within the number.
