4 Minute ReadSyracuse vs. North Carolina Prediction: Can UNC Beat Cuse Three Times in NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal on Saturday?
Syracuse and North Carolina meet Saturday, May 16, at 2:30 p.m. ET at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, New York, in the second NCAA lacrosse quarterfinal on Long Island. North Carolina is favored at -132, while Syracuse comes back at +108 as the Orange try to finally solve a Tar Heels team that has already beaten them twice this season.
The revenge angle is real. Syracuse has never played the same opponent three times in one season, and beating any team three times is difficult in any sport. Still, North Carolina’s offense has been cleaner, deeper, and more reliable across the first two matchups, and the Tar Heels have the stronger profile to advance to semifinal weekend.

Syracuse vs. North Carolina Prediction - NCAA Lacrosse Tournament
North Carolina beat Syracuse 12-10 in the ACC semifinals on May 1 behind a seven-point performance from Owen Duffy, adding to its earlier win over the Orange this season. The Tar Heels then handled UAlbany in the NCAA Tournament opener, with Dom Pietramala erupting for 10 goals and senior goalie Kent Goode delivering a strong performance after a late-season change in net. That combination matters because UNC is not just winning with one formula. The Tar Heels can pressure opponents through star attack play, faceoff volume, and offensive depth.
Syracuse survived Yale last week, but the performance did not fully erase the season-long concerns. The Orange have had defensive communication issues, inconsistent goaltending, and costly stretches where penalties and turnovers give opponents extra possessions. That is dangerous against North Carolina because the Tar Heels have already exposed Syracuse’s defensive structure twice and have repeatedly found ways to create separation late in games.
The biggest swing area is possession. North Carolina’s Brady Wambach has been strong at the faceoff stripe, especially in second halves against Syracuse, and that can quickly tilt a close game. If the Tar Heels win enough draws and force the Orange defense to defend repeated long possessions, Syracuse will need a near-perfect offensive day from Joey Spallina and the attack just to keep pace. The Orange can make this uncomfortable, but UNC has more reliable ways to score.

Syracuse has the revenge angle and the emotional pull of trying to finally break through in the third meeting, but North Carolina has simply been the better and more complete team. The Tar Heels should outscore the Orange again, control enough faceoffs, and advance to Championship Weekend.
