2024 The Open Championship Odds: Bettors Backing Collin Morikawa at Royal Troon
The 152nd Open Championship, also known as the British Open, is set to get underway from Royal Troon in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland on Thursday. It's the fourth and final major of the 2024 PGA Tour season, which means LIV golfers will once again be competing in the field.
Bryson DeChambeau beat Rory McIlroy in an epic duel down the stretch at the third major back at Pinehurst No. 2 during the U.S. Open last month. Now, totally different conditions are set at Royal Troon, playing as a par 71 on a links-style course.
Four par 3s and three par 5s, plus large average green square footage areas create the primary defense, with additional winds playing as a primary obstacle. The red fescue fairways and greens comprise the surfaces, with fescue in the rough. Undulating fairways form a big challenge, creating errant lies, and the greens run 10.5 to 11 feet via Stimpmeter, creating slower putting conditions than Bentgrass and Bermudagrass that is primarily featured stateside.
Bettors are backing Collin Morikawa to win his second Claret Jug this week, as he's been in contention for the majority of recent events played. Robert MacIntyre is fresh off of his second outright win of the year, mounting an impressive comeback win at the Genesis Scottish Open this past weekend to earn his first win in his home country of Scotland.
PGA handicapper Matt MacKay is here to share the latest analysis of the field at The Open Championship, which includes current betting data and outright winner odds. Remember to place your wagers before Round 1 tees off around 2 a.m. ET time, due to playing overseas with early tee times.

Last year's Open Championship winner, Brian Harman, won by six strokes in dominant fashion at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. He was a massive underdog at 110-1 odds before the tournament began, but his approach shots and putting were solid all week. Currently, Harman is 70-1 to defend his title, albeit at a different course. The defending champion will be making his debut at Royal Troon this week.
Other notable golfers in the field from an outright winner context include Tyrrell Hatton, Robert MacIntyre, Shane Lowry, and Bryson DeChambeau. DeChambeau has performed well at all three majors this season, and he's fairly short at 14-1. Hatton, who grew up playing links courses in England, is 28-1, offering good value.
Lowry, the 2019 winner at Royal Portrush, is 40-1 and ranks highly in strokes gained on approach this season, while still seeking his first solo outright win in 2024. MacIntyre has performed well in four previous Open Championship events, although he's regressed in the last two outings, sliding from T6 and T8 finishes in 2019 and 2021, down to T34 and T71 the past two years.
Tommy Fleetwood continues to play well on links courses but cannot put it together for four rounds, as evidenced last week at Renaissance Club. He's fairly short at 25-1 odds in the outright winner market, leaning on his driver and approach shots to counter his streaky putter. Fleetwood missed the cut at Royal Troon in 2016 but has carded finishes of T10 and T4 at The Open Championship since 2022.
OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP BETTING DATA
GOLFER | PERCENTAGE OF BETS |
---|---|
Collin Morikawa | 6.38% |
Robert MacIntyre | 5.68% |
Wyndham Clark | 5.01% |
Scottie Scheffler | 4.42% |
Ludvig Aberg | 3.75% |
Collin Morikawa (6.38%)
Collin Morikawa has been red-hot on the PGA Tour in the past few months. The 2021 Open Championship winner at Royal St. George's, his debut at this major, saw the Californian go 15-under-par with no round higher than 68.
Ranked 16th SG: off-the-tee, 12th SG: around the green, and second in driving accuracy rate, Morikawa's popularity at 14-1 makes a lot of sense. He's currently getting the highest betting handle at 6.38 percent. Last week, MacIntyre was the most heavily bet golfer in the outright market, so investing in Morikawa at this price feels like a good decision ahead of Round 1.
Robert MacIntyre (5.68%)
It's been an up and down year for Robert MacIntyre but he's currently riding the high of winning the Scottish Open in front of a raucous crowd of supporters and fans with a clutch 20-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole.
MacIntyre also won the RBC Canadian Open at 80-1, demonstrating his strong putting prowess. Ranked 36th SG: off-the-tee, 24th in scrambling, 17th in par 4 scoring average, and seventh in total scoring average, MacIntyre's shown that he's built to handle Scottish links courses throughout his career.
At 40-1 odds, we're landing nearly the same value on the Scotsman compared to where he started in the outright winner market last week. Bettors are confident in his ability to replicate his performance for the second consecutive week ahead of his debut at Royal Troon. A 0.25 unit wager staked returns 10 units of profit, which could pay dividends on Sunday.
Wyndham Clark (5.01%)
Wyndham Clark hasn't had much success at either Open Championship major he's played since 2022. However, Clark is playing good golf lately, recording back-to-back top-ten finishes at Travelers and the Scottish Open this past weekend.
With six top-ten finishes on the year, plus ranking 16th SG: putting, 26th SG: off-the-tee, and sixth in driving distance, Clark has enough firepower and touch on the greens to contend at a lucrative 65-1 price in the outright winner betting market.
He's already been bet down from 80-1 to 65-1 at FanDuel Sportsbook, demonstrating his popularity amongst golf bettors, earning five percent of the total betting handle. This is more than Ludvig Åberg and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who is the outright betting favorite once again at +450 odds.
A 0.10 unit wager returns 6.5 units of profit on Clark. It doesn't hurt to sprinkle on a player with Clark's talent, as he's only a couple of missed putts from turning a pair of runner-up finishes into potential outright wins this season.
