4 Minute ReadSweden vs. USA Olympic Hockey Odds, Analysis, Best Bets for Wednesday's Quarterfinal in Milan
The knockout rounds have arrived in Milan Cortina, and Team USA now faces its first true pressure test of the 2026 Winter Olympics. The Americans take on Sweden in Wednesday’s quarterfinal at 3 PM Eastern, entering as heavy -280 favorites to advance. On paper, the talent gap favors the U.S., but tournament hockey rarely follows the script.
USA’s group stage wasn’t flawless. They survived Denmark after trailing for a notable stretch in Game 2 and haven’t consistently overwhelmed opponents the way Canada has. Still, with a loaded NHL roster and elite goaltending, they remain firmly on track for a potential gold medal collision with Canada. The question is whether they can clean things up in time.

Sweden vs. USA Olympic Hockey Quarterfinal Breakdown
Sweden is no pushover. Lucas Raymond sits near the top of the tournament scoring leaderboard with 8 points through four games, driving the offense with speed and playmaking. Jacob Markström has also been solid in goal, posting a .925 save percentage. Sweden’s structure and discipline make them dangerous in single elimination. If this game slows down and becomes a tight, defensive battle, the upset path opens.
For the U.S., Auston Matthews has contributed offensively with three goals and five points in the first few games, but the overall team scoring hasn’t exploded yet. They haven’t dominated the stat sheet, and there have been stretches of sloppy puck management and defensive breakdowns. Against Denmark, that nearly cost them. Against Sweden, those lapses could be punished more severely.
The biggest edge for Team USA remains in net. Connor Hellebuyck has been one of the tournament’s most reliable goaltenders, sporting a 1.00 goals against average and a .952 save percentage. In elimination hockey, elite goaltending can mask imperfections elsewhere. If Hellebuyck plays to form, Sweden will struggle to generate enough quality looks to keep pace.
At -280, the market clearly believes the Americans will advance. The more interesting question is how they look doing it. If the offense finds rhythm and they dictate tempo early, this could serve as the springboard into a semifinal and possibly a long awaited showdown with Canada. If they grind through another uneven performance, concerns about their gold medal ceiling will only grow.
