2023 Waste Management Phoenix Open Preview, Field, Odds, and Picks
The PGA Tour’s next stop is in Scottsdale, Arizona, where the Greatest Show on Grass is set for another rendition. It’s the wildest event of the year, where roughly half a million people will travel to TPC Scottsdale to watch the tournament.
Couple that with Super Bowl LVII taking place on the other side of the valley, and you’re in for the rowdiest weekend of the year in the Phoenix area. Let’s dive into the tournament details and check out where the value lies from a betting perspective.

2023 Waste Management PHOENIX OPEN COURSE
TPC Scottsdale offers one of the most unique environments on the tour, featuring a 16th hole where the golf’s unwritten rules are essentially thrown out the window. The par-3 16th hole sees golfers enter a 20,000-seat stadium, where spectators get loud and cheer (or heckle) players. It’s an all-day party where the occasional hole-in-one can set off a crowd explosion, causing beer cans to rain down on the course. Like I said, throw out all the unwritten rules when heading to the 16th.
As for the rest of TPC Scottsdale, it’s a beautiful course offering magnificent views of Arizona’s landscape. The course itself is a par-71 layout that ranges 7,261 total yards. As for the keys to success, tee shots will be critical as players want to set themselves up with the right angle to attack the greens. The course is littered with hazards and treacherous slopes surrounding the greens, which can quickly cause additional strokes to be added to golfers’ scorecards. Ultimately, it’s all about hitting Greens in Regulation on this course.
2023 Waste Management PHOENIX OPEN PURSE
$20,000,000 is at stake in Scottsdale, marking the highest purse thus far through the 2022-2023 PGA Tour season. The winner is set to take home a respectable share of $3,600,000.
2023 Waste Management PHOENIX OPEN PREVIEW
This is a stacked field this weekend, featuring nine of the world’s top 10 golfers. Rory McIlroy will make his 2023 debut and he’ll be challenged by defending champion Scottie Scheffler and the red-hot Jon Rahm. Rahm, an Arizona State alumnus, will be a fan favorite heading into play this weekend. He’s also the betting favorite (+650) amongst this monster field.
Any number of players can find themselves in contention heading into Sunday. Many players have found success at TPC Scottsdale, including two-time winner Hideki Matsuyama. He won the tournament back-to-back in 2016 and 2017 after placing T2 in 2015. Both of his victories were decided in a playoff, which hasn’t been an anomaly in recent years. The WM Phoenix Open has featured a playoff in five of the last seven years. That includes Scheffler’s win in last year's event, where he outlasted Patrick Cantlay in a playoff.
2023 Waste Management PHOENIX OPEN PREDICTION
It’s not uncommon to see consecutive winners at the WM Phoenix Open, with Matsuyama being the most recent to pull off the feat. Johnny Miller accomplished it in 1974 and 1975 and he’s accompanied by Jimmy Demaret (‘49 & ‘50), Ben Hogan (‘46 & ‘47), and Arnold Palmer, who won three straight ranging from 1961-1963.
I’m going to lock in Scheffler to secure a second straight win at TPC Scottsdale this weekend. Starting with his course history, he’s found plenty of success in Scottsdale. The American obviously won last year’s event (-16) and added a T7 (-16) the year prior.
Scheffler’s in remarkable form, entering the event ranked second in the world rankings. He’s coming off a fantastic 2022 campaign, where he notched three victories and posted seven additional top-five finishes. The 26-year-old is already off to an excellent start in the 2022-2023 season, finishing inside the top 10 in four of his most recent five outings. The only finish outside of the top 10 was a T11 outing at The American Express in mid-January. Aside from Rahm, Scheffler is the hottest player in the world right now. Let’s back him in Scottsdale this weekend.
