5 Minute Read2025 RBC Canadian Open Preview, PGA Tour Best Bets at Osprey Valley
The PGA Tour heads to TPC Toronto's Osprey Valley North Course for the first time at the 2025 RBC Canadian Open. Robert MacIntyre is set to defend his title and is currently valued at +2800 in the outright winner betting market.
Rory McIlroy is the betting favorite in this field at +450 odds. Without Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy is a sizable favorite, with Ludvig Åberg a distant second at +1400 odds. This would be McIlroy's third win at the RBC Canadian Open, claiming victory in 2019 and 2022.
Osprey Valley is a par 70 that is just shy of 7,400 yards in length. Golfers start and end their round with par 5s, while most of the par 4s exceed 450 yards, running up to 500+ yards on four different holes. Two par 3s exceed 220 yards.
Water hazards are frequent, along with narrow, doglegged fairways that are tree-lined with six-inch rough. Poa Annua and Bentgrass green hybrids are estimated to run 11.5 feet via Stimpmeter, which is on the slower end of the putting velocity scale. Greens are average in size, so ball-striking and tee-to-green efficiency is key to avoid squares on the scorecard.
PGA handicapper Matt MacKay is back with three RBC Canadian Open best bets, each worth one unit, to tail ahead of Round 1 on Thursday morning. He's coming off of a 2-1 outing at the Memorial Tournament, which included a Sepp Straka Top 10 Finish prop at +280 odds.

PGA Best Bets: 2025 RBC Canadian Open
18 Hole Matchups - Round 1: Nick Taylor (-120) vs. Alex Smalley (-105)
Nick Taylor's epic 70-foot birdie putt to beat Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff during the 2023 RBC Canadian Open is now reflected in the RBC Canadian Open logo. The Canadian golfer is coming off of a strong solo fourth-place finish at Muirfield on Sunday and will look to extend his quality play at Osprey Valley on Thursday.
Taylor ranks 29th in total strokes gained, including 13th SG: Approach, 20th in driving accuracy, and 12th at finding greens in regulation. He's also 25th proximity, 35th scrambling, 11th on par 4s, and 33rd in scoring average per round.
Alex Smalley has also had production on the links in 2025. He's got a lot of impressive metrics, just like Taylor, although he's coming off of a missed cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Smalley is outside the top 100 in proximity and 91st on approach shots from 200+ yards. This means he's going to have to work hard to stay at even par, since his inability to get close to hole locations on a consistent basis puts him behind schedule.
Neither golfer has a quality putter, so this matchup comes down to who can get closer to the pin with their tee-to-green game. I'll back Taylor as a slight favorite to beat Smalley with a lower score in Round 1 at -120 odds.

18 Hole Matchups - Round 1: Matt Wallace (-120) vs. Matti Schmid (-105)
Matti Schmid has a lot of appeal entering Round 1 at Osprey Valley. The 27-year-old German nearly forced a playoff on the final hole at the Charles Schwab Challenge, converting a chip-in birdie on the 72nd hole to wind up with a solo runner-up finish behind Ben Griffin.
Schmid ranks 15th in driving distance, 10th on approach shots from 200+ yards, 22nd in proximity and 38th at finding greens in regulation. Three of his four top 10 finishes have occurred since April 20th at the Corales Puntacana Championship.
Matt Wallace is ranked 104th SG: Off-the-Tee, 132nd SG: Approach, 155th SG: Putting, 172nd proximity and 123rd at finding greens in regulation. The best part of the Englishman's game is scrambling (5th) and driving distance (48th), which could be why oddsmakers value Wallace as a slight favorite in Round 1 against Schmid.
Wallace is also 23rd on par 4s and 43rd in one-putt percentage this season. However, Schmid is a bomber off-the-tee and on approach, while also ranked 14th in birdie or better percentage.
Let's pounce on the value with Schmid as an underdog and bet one unit on him to beat Wallace in this 18 Hole Matchups Round 1 prop on Thursday.
- Best Bet: Matti Schmid (-105)
Top 30 Finish
Robert MacIntyre will likely attract a lot of action based on his breakthrough win on the PGA Tour at this event last season. The Scotsman has elevated his play lately, carding a T6 finish at Colonial, before a T20 at Muirfield on Sunday.
Ranked 24th in total strokes gained. This includes 20th SG: Off-the-Tee and 25th SG: Approach, while also sitting inside the top 20 for converting greens in regulation at 68.9 percent. 45th in driving accuracy means MacIntyre should be able to avoid errant lies off-the-tee in the six-inch rough. In 2025, he's 23rd on par 4s, which comprise 12 of 18 holes at Osprey Valley.
Let's bet one final unit on Robert MacIntyre to turn in a Top 30 Finish for the third consecutive event at -125 odds as he attempts to defend his 2024 RBC Canadian Open title.
