British Open Odds

Sportsbooks are giving Fox +10000 odds to win the British Open, that’s an implied 1% chance. Bettors are swarming to take advantage of those odds. Over the last seven days, 9.7% of bets have been placed on Fox to win the event.

That’s nearly double bettors’ second favorite, Rory McIlroy, who’s seen 5.5% of bets. McIlroy is the sportsbooks’ favorite to win the British Open at +1000, or an implied 9.1% chance.

The love for Fox is only made more confusing by the fact that he’s followed by seven favorites on the betting market. McIlroy, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Will Zalatoris, Xander Schauffle, Scottie Scheffler, and Jordan Spieth round out the top eight. All seven of those guys are among the sportsbooks’ top nine. The only two sportsbooks’ favorites that bettors don’t like are Jon Rahm, only 1.7% of bets, and Justin Thomas, 2.1% of bets.

This isn’t the case of bettors backing underdogs ahead of a tournament. The betting market is Ryan Fox and then all the favorites, which shows that bettors truly believe that Fox has a chance to take home his first PGA Tour victory.

That said, there is one other massive underdog getting love on the betting market. Padraig Harrington is ninth on the betting market with 3.1% of bets despite his +15000 odds. Again, he’s followed by Cameron Smith, another favorite.
